fancy for the stage

One of the greatest tests of an actor is his capacity for listening. By-play must be unobtrusive; I received, not very long ago, in a provincial town, a letter from a young lady, who wished to adopt the stage as a profession but was troubled in her mind by certain anxieties and uncertainties. These she desired me to relieve. The questions asked by my correspondent are rather typical questions-questions that are generally asked by those who, approaching the stage from the outside, in the light of prejudice and misrepresentation, believe the calling of the actor to be one morally dangerous and intellectually contemptible; one in which it is equally easy to succeed as an artist and degenerate as an individual. She begins by telling me that she has a “fancy for the stage,” and has “heard a great many things about it.”

soul-searching

A motivated skill is something that you like to do, and do well. That’s how an insurance claims manager who likes project management and writing became a technical writer, a CPA with a passion for New Age health care became a spa manager, and a systems engineer with an innate talent for foreign languages positioned herself as an international expert in telecommunications. Instead of focusing on job titles, these successful career changers did some “soul-searching” to figure out what they were really good at and loved to do. Then they positioned themselves accordingly.

General Motors and General Electric

Visa and MasterCard, which authorize the two most frequently issued cards, actually do not distribute credit cards themselves. Instead, they act as franchise organizations that license member banks to offer cards featuring the Visa or Master-Card name. Each issuer then sets its own policies within broad guidelines prescribed by Visa and MasterCard covering the interest rate the issuer charges, the applicants it accepts, and the benefits and services it provides. Traditionally, only banks issued Visas and Master Cards. In recent years, however, manufacturing companies like General Motors and General Electric, as well as long-distance phone companies like AT&T, have begun distributing the cards.

more successful ventures

Whenever she felt bad about herself, the evaluations would remind her that she truly was a good and competent person. Another demoralized marketing manager (who was relegated to the gulags during a corporate reorganization) put her abilities in perspective by compiling a portfolio that showcased her greatest achievements. She included newspaper articles describing some of her more successful ventures, and some glowing letters of recommendation from managers and colleagues. Then, she consolidated that information into an impressive resume. Although she knew it might be a year or more before she’d actively job hunt, putting those documents together was very reparative.

a formality

Getting through the rough times might be easier if you recognize that you’ve entered a skill-building phase in your career that will make you more marketable elsewhere. “If I hadn’t known that my situation would be temporary,” says the customer service manager, “I probably would’ve been miserable.” As it is, he isn’t sorry that his name showed up on a list of jobs to be cut. “Mentally, I’d already packed my bags,” he says. “The paperwork was just a formality.” Now that he’s in the job market again, he’s discovering that many employers are interested in his ability to manage through change. This is fine with him, but he has a requirement of his own: He wants to manage change that comes from growth rather than shrinkage.

Doctor Copeland pressed his head with his hands, but still the steady trembling would not stop. ‘I cannot hear what you say.’ ‘Then at last they come to get them. They quickly taken Willie and them boys to the sick ward and their legs were all swolled and froze. They sawed off both our Willie’s feet. Buster Johnson lost one foot and the other boy got well. But our Willie—he crippled for life now. Both his feet sawed off.’ The words were finished and Portia leaned over and struck her head upon the table. What Delights You?

Every profession has its playthings. By choosing subject matter that delights you, your day will automatically go more easily. Physicists play with mathematical formulas. Architects love form and space. Writers love to play with words and ideas. Like Peter Lind, Karen Messina-Hirsch loves to play with food. As the president and founder of Food Performance in Wheaton, Illinois, Messina-Hirsch makes food the center of her professional life. It’s a focus that had its roots in early childhood. Growing up in a small Italian community in New Jersey, she has fond memories of working side by side with her mom in the kitchen. Apparently, she also had early signs of talent.
