nuances of negotiation

The negotiation arena has a language of its own. I have seen many negotiation sessions fail simply due to not understanding the language of negotiation. My objective here is not to provide you with an in-depth study of all the nuances of negotiation but to create a mindset, an awareness, and an overview of the logistics of creative sales negotiation. I suggest you augment your negotiation skills and confidence by considering other publications on the subject. Consider this chapter as your springboard to further study.

customer’s preferred business style

Remember, each call is situational. I caution you to safeguard yourself against conversational drift. Don’t let the talkative customer dominate all your time with such topics as religion, capital punishment, or empty chatter that compromises the objective of the pleasantry stage. During the pleasantry stage you begin to understand your customer’s preferred business style, just as the customer will have a good feeling about you and your level of confidence. By the way, my previous point about a customer forming an opinion about you within 15 seconds works both ways.

‘From here up don’t you think he favors that boy who used to date with——’ ‘How you feel this morning, Etta?’ Mick asked. She looked down under the bed and her private box was still in the exact place where she had left it ‘A lot you care,’ Etta said. ‘You needn’t try to pick a fight’ biscuits. ‘Ask me no questions and Till tell you no lies. A bad end comes to a person who pries. Nearly every day they walked home from school together. They talked about God. Sometimes she would wake up in the night and shiver over what they had said. Harry was a Pantheist.

minutes before midnight

A bottle of Agua Florida was on the bathroom shelf and he touched the stopper to his temples. He whistled an old song, and as he descended the narrow stairs the tune left a broken echo behind him. Louis was supposed to be on duty behind the counter. But he had soldiered on the job and the place was deserted. The front door stood open to the empty street. The clock on the wall pointed to seventeen minutes before midnight. The radio was on and there was talk about the crisis Hitler had cooked up over Danzig. He went back to the kitchen and found Louis asleep in a chair. The boy had taken off his shoes and unbuttoned his trousers. His head drooped on his chest. A long wet spot on his shirt showed that he had been sleeping a good while.

Supreme Court decision or an IRS ruling

Though Congress often talks about simplifying the tax code, it seems to get only more complicated. Try to keep up with the basics of tax planning, but find a preparer who immerses himself or herself in the details of the tax code and who can determine how changes in the law affect you. For example, when a Supreme Court decision or an IRS ruling narrows the definition of a deducible home office, the ideal preparer would notify you of the change if he or she knows that you have claimed a home office deduction for several years. The preparer should advise you whether the new ruling limits or ends your deduction and inform you of any business practice you can change to qualify for a deduction under the new rules.

above-ground structure

Some markers are grandiose, constructed of marble or bronze with ornate carving and inscriptions. Others are very simple. Some people install a bench near their family plot. Of course, the fancier the grave marker, the higher its expense. Many cemeteries also levy an annual charge for perpetual care of the gravesite. Be aware of how much that charge will run. Those who want a grander burial choose a mausoleum. This above-ground structure can be simple or extremely ornate, holding one person or an entire family. Instead of listing merely their birth and death dates, some people use mausoleums to chronicle their accomplishments.

rule of thumb

As you will see by trying various combinations of factors on the worksheet, the earlier you start to save, the less you must put aside each month or each year. And, of course, the longer you wait, the more you must save every month. As a rule of thumb, set aside between $2,000 and $4,000 a year if you begin when your child is a newborn. If you start saving when he or she is in second or third grade, reserve between $4,000 and $8,000 a year. To give you an idea of how much money you will accumulate if you save $100 a month, use Figure 12.2. Find the number of years until your child enrolls in college in the left column.

off in some part

J. ms summer was different from any other time Mick could remember. Nothing much happened that she could describe to herself in thoughts or words—but there was a feeling of change. AH the time she was excited. In the morning she couldn’t wait to get out of bed and start going for the day. And at night she hated like hell to have to sleep again. Right after breakfast she took the kids out, and except for meals they were gone most of the day. A good deal of the time they just roamed around the streets—with her pulling Ralph’s wagon and Bubber following along behind.

He crawled down under the bed for something. What you want under there? You better leave my things alone. If I ever caught you meddling in my private box I’d bust yourhead against the side of the wall. I would. I’d stomp on your brains.’What kind of a job?’ asked their Dad. ‘Anything I could do, or just for girls?”Just for a girl. A clerk down at Woolworth’s is going to get married next week.’ “The ten-cent store——’ Mick said. ‘You interested?’ The question took her by surprise. She had just been thinking about a sack of wintergreen candy she had bought there the day before. She felt hot and tense.

alley fence

They were scooting each other with the hose. The stream of water sparkled bright in the sun. The wind blew out sprays of it like mist and in this mist there were the colors of the rainbow. A line of clothes flapped in the wind—white sheets, Ralph’s blue dress, a red blouse and nightgowns—wet and fresh and blowing out in different shapes. The day was almost like summer-time. Fuz2y little yellow jackets buzzed around the honeysuckle on the alley fence. “Watch me hold it up over my head!’ George hollered. ‘Watch how the water runs down.’ She was too full of energy to sit still. She began to hit this. She and Harry had talked about so many things lately.
